When Shane McKellar first moved to Sicamous, he was looking for a new experience outside his comfort zone. In 2009, he walked into the firehall looking for a challenge – and found a community.

“We are all part of something bigger than us at Sicamous Fire Rescue,” McKellar says. “We aren’t just people that work together; when the call comes in, we are all like family here.”

Fifteen years later, Lieutenant McKellar plays a key role in fire prevention and inspections for short- and long-term rentals. These inspections help ensure businesses and residences meet fire codes while also allowing firefighters to pre-plan for potential emergencies.

He also takes the lead on public education through community outreach initiatives, including Fire Chief for a Day, Fire Prevention Week and firehall tours.

“Knowing when to admit you don’t know everything and to ask for help is huge in fire service,” Lieutenant McKellar explains. “This helps mold the next group of firefighters, officer and leaders, and teaches them how to be successful.”

Among his many experiences with Sicamous Fire Rescue, one of Lieutenant McKellar’s fondest memories is the department’s annual Toy Drive, where he takes on the role of Santa in turnout gear.

“Taking the time to talk to the kids for a few minutes and seeing them smile is all worth it,” he says, “to give them that little bit extra Christmas spirit is all worth it.”

When he’s not serving the community through fire rescue, Lieutenant McKellar enjoys spending time on his boat in the summer, being with family and expanding his knowledge through courses that help him grow both personally and professionally.

He is always looking for new ideas and techniques to improve operations at the firehall, reduce risks in the community and enhance overall emergency preparedness. Sicamous Fire Rescue is thankful for Lieutenant McKellar’s commitment and service.

If you see Lieutenant McKellar around the firehall, be sure to say hello!
