April 27, 2022—Today, Mayor Terry Rysz presented long-time Sicamous resident Lloyd Gavel, 96, with a Community Champion Certificate to recognize volunteer service within the community than spanned over five decades.

Lloyd moved to Sicamous with his wife Jodie Gavel in 1970 and raised three of their six children here. Lloyd truly is a Community Champion, volunteering with various non-profit organizations including the Sicamous Fire Department, Sicamous Legion Branch 99, the Sicamous Lions Club, the Kinsman, the Eagle Valley Seniors Meals Society (Wheels to Meals), and community events such as Moose Mouse Days.

Lloyd obtained funding for a community bus to drive seniors to Salmon Arm for their appointments and errands (before we were fortunate to have the Eagle Valley Transportation Society), plowed snow for neighbours and seniors, provided shelter to those who were stranded or stuck, and grew extra food in his garden to share widely with the community.

The District would like to take the opportunity to thank Lloyd for his service and dedication to the community. On behalf of MLA Greg Kyllo (Shuswap) who could not attend today, Mayor Rysz presented a letter of appreciation.

April 24-30, 2022 is National Volunteer Week in Canada.
