In April 2012, Jarrod LaRoy had a young family to protect and a desire to make a difference. He found a way to do so when he joined Sicamous Fire Rescue. Nearly 13 years later, Captain LaRoy plays a key leadership role in training the next generation of firefighters.

As a leader in the department, Captain LaRoy plays a key role in shaping new recruits, overseeing their training in the academy and ensuring they are prepared to serve the community. As an NFPA 1001 certified firefighter and ice rescue technician, he also manages specialty training. When a call comes in, he’s often in the passenger seat of the firetruck, leading the crew as the officer on duty.

“Remaining calm under pressure and leading by example are the qualities I try to bring to every call and training session,” shares Captain LaRoy.

Reflecting on his time with Sicamous Fire Rescue, LaRoy recalls the 2021 wildfires as a particularly challenging and memorable experience.

“To have a fire of that size right in your backyard, sparked by the most improbable chain of events, was quite the experience,” he recalls. “I’m proud of how our small department went right into action to protect the Two Mile area.”

Over the years, his role has deepened his appreciation for the many people working to keep Sicamous safe. He enjoys working with the dedicated group of first responders to provide a vital service and is appreciative of the support Sicamous Fire Rescue receives from the community.

“There are a lot of dedicated agencies in Sicamous and the surrounding area that put in countless hours, and it mostly happens behind the scenes,” says Captain LaRoy. "The community is very supportive, and it's helpful knowing they're behind us."

When he’s not at the firehall, LaRoy is likely at the rink watching his son play hockey or catching a game on the weekend. He also enjoys camping in the summer. Professionally, he works as a project coordinator and estimator in the road construction industry.
