In partnership with Food Cycle Science, the District of Sicamous offered 100 FoodCycler™ units at a subsidized price to residents to use in their homes.
The pilot project, which ran from February to May 2024, asked participating households to track their waste diversion over the course of a 12-week period by keeping track of how often they run their FoodCycler™.
Food Cycle Science attended the August 28 committee of the whole meeting to present the results of the pilot project. Here are some fast facts:
- 66.67 per cent of participants do not compost because of concerns about animals, pests etc.
- A total of 23.7 metric tonnes of food waste will be diverted from the landfill per year from the 100 FoodCyclers in use in our community.
- Based on the pilot project, the use of the FoodCycler results in a reduction of 28.5 garbage bags per household per year being trucked to the landfill.
- 93 per cent of participants will continue to use the FoodCycler after the pilot project.
- Participants rated their experience with the pilot project as 4.5/5 stars.
Council will consider next steps in working with FoodCycler to reduce municipal food waste. Stay tuned!
